Centerline as published in the February 2010 IDS Newsletter and written by Ken Levy, IDS President
Dear Fellow IDS Members:
This fall and winter seems to be flying by, but not without notice. Snow and cold weather has kept many of us out of the saddle much more then we would have liked. I do think that our equine partners are not complaining however. Either way, spring is sure to come and it does seem to be staying lighter later in the evening (or am I just wishing that this is true?).
The USDF Annual meeting was held in Austin, Texas December 2-5, 2010. IDS was well represented with Bonna McCuiston, Terry Luley, Coralie Hughes, Lynda Weese and me representing either IDS or Region 2. The meeting this year saw numerous changes:
George Williams was elected as President of the USDF
Steve Schubert was elected as USDF Treasurer
Lloyd Landkamer was elected as USDF Region 4 Director
Ken Levy was elected as USDF Region 2 Director
I would like to thank those who supported my election and as I promised during my pre-convention campaign, I will do my best to drive growth within the Region, I will strongly support GMO focus within USDF and will work to improve communication within our Region. To that end, I am pleased to announce that the USDF Region 2 Web Site has been renewed and will be kept up to date. You can see the new web site by going to: www.USDFregion2.org
In addition to the changes in leadership at the USDF, as Chair of the USDF Ad Hoc committee on membership structure, I was asked to stand before the Board of Governors and present the committee’s recommendations. Although not an easy task, the BOG approved all of the committee’s recommendations. If you are interested in learning more about the details of what occurred at the BOG meeting, I recommend that you go to the USDF web site and read the minutes from the meeting. The most significant changes that took place will be the increase in dues for USDF members. See below for details. In addition, a new membership type was created. This is the USDF Education Membership. The fee is $35.00 for adults and $10.00 for students. The membership includes no provision for competing and only includes the Connection Magazine via the Web. All other educational opportunities offered by the USDF will be available to this new membership category. It is hoped that this new membership type will attract new people to the USDF and hopefully to our GMOs.
As many of you know Dr. Gerd Heuschmann conducted a 4 day clinic at Jennifer Conour’s barn last fall. Dr. Heuschmann has been an opponent to the Roll-Kur method of training for many years and due in part to his pressure and that of many other like-minded horse men and women, the FEI has now ruled against the use of Roll-Kur. Details on enforcement are being developed, but finally the FEI has moved to take action that will protect the horse at FEI sanctioned competitions. Next, I will suspect all National governing bodies will follow with their own rules. It is about time we began to be more concerned about the well being of the horse versus just the score in competition.
Moving on the IDS business. On January 23, 2010, your IDS Officers and Directors met for our annual Planning meeting. Thanks to Katherine Rosback for facilitating the meeting again this year. Your leadership team analyzed what went well and what we might have done differently. In conclusion, 2009 was a very good year for the IDS. The challenge continues to be member participation at the numerous educational events that are organized by the IDS Education Committee. IDS members continue to tell us that Education (clinics and lectures) are still one of the top areas of interest, however, even though the costs are being kept to a minimum, member participation is not what we would have expected. We will continue to focus on providing top quality education and maybe as the economy continues to improve, member participation will also improve. The following are the key strategic initiatives that your IDS leadership team will be focused on delivering in 2010:
Drive volunteer engagement in 2010 by using a more robust database to maintain knowledge of areas that members indicate that they would be willing to help
Expand the e-mail blast system to keep IDS members even more up to date on key IDS activities
Develop Quarterly "posters" for area barns and businesses identifying clinics, education events and competitions
Develop a more organized method of soliciting sponsorship for IDS events/shows
Develop a promotional program (raffle) for the Hoosier Horse Fair. Lendon Grey will be the clinician. Lendon trains Courtney King-Dye and Courtney’s horse Indocus was just immortalized by Breyer as a new model horse. Courtney King-Dye has agreed to autograph one of the Indocus model horses and we also hope to get Lendon to also agree to sign the model. IDS will raffle the horse at the IDS booth and the funds will be used to help financially support a top notch educational event for IDS. IDS members will have an opportunity to purchase tickets prior to the HHF.
For those of you who might want to help out at shows (scribing, ring set-up, etc.) but feel that you don’t have enough knowledge or experience, we have a solution. Come to the March 6 th Foxton Farms Indoor show where IDS will conduct a Volunteer Training Workshop. The 2008 workshop was very successful and this year’s event will be even better. Don’t miss out!!
I want to thank the IDS Officers and Directors for an outstanding job in 2009 and I believe that 2010 will be a banner year for the club.
Until the next issue,
Best wishes for all "10"s
Ken
