Dear Fellow IDS Members:

Will it ever stop raining? Well not permanently but just long enough for me to cut my pastures and for hay to be brought in. Also, I am hoping that the weather clears up for the Indy Dressage Classic that will be held June 12-13, 2010. Speaking of the Indy Classic, I understand that we still need volunteers for the show. Please check your schedules to see if you have some time to dedicate to the club. If you have not been up to Foxton Farms since ownership has changed, you might want to see the improvements, including the expanded schooling area. I also invite you to look carefully at the web site for the IDS sponsored or sanctioned schooling shows. We have a record number of schooling shows within Indiana and this means that you don’t have to travel far to attend a one or two day schooling show.

April is behind us and the Hoosier Horse Fair was another success for the club. We signed-up 5 members and initiated a drawing for 4 seats for the Tuesday Dressage competition at the WEG being held at the Kentucky Horse Park. In addition, Lauren Griffin had a great idea to help generate funds to aid in paying a bit towards Courtney King-Dye’s injuries when she was injured in a riding accident. Lauren and her mother Darcy made green ribbons and sold them for $1.00 each. I understand that we collected over $100.00. An interesting side note is that I was teaching a clinic in Kalamazoo, Michigan in Mid-April and the GMO, Glass-ED, who sponsored the clinic were also selling green ribbons to aid Courtney. I asked them about the ribbons and they said that some of their members were at the Hoosier Horse Fair and saw what the IDS had done and thought it was a good idea. It’s a shame that it sometimes takes a catastrophic situation to make us think clearly, but I must admit, that until Courtney’s injury, I rarely wore a helmet. I realize that it is up to each one of us to make a decision about our own safety, but I now wear a helmet at all times when on horseback. In fact, the USDF has published a statement regarding helmet wear indicating that the National Federation of Dressage strongly urges helmets to be worn when mounted. We have only one brain and I for one want to keep what little brain cells I still have functioning.

On the education front, reminder that your club is hosting the USDF Region 2 Adult Clinic this Fall. The clinic will be held on October 30-31, 2010, at Rosebud Ranch Equestrian Center in Brookston, IN. The clinician will be Olympian Charlotte Bridal-Baker. The USDF Adult Clinics are intended to provide USDF members and amateur riders affordable access to a renowned clinician in a symposium style format for maximum auditor benefit. Eight adult riders and horses, working in private sessions each day are selected to demonstrate a variety of levels, breeds, types and training issues to maximize the learning experience for auditors of all ages. A lecture will also be given. Riders are chosen by a selection committee based on guidelines set forth by USDF. These clinics are held in each of the nine USDF Regions bi-annually. Auditors may pre-register directly through USDF. The fee is $70 for members and $80 for non-members for both days or $40 for members and $45 for non-members for one day only. Walk in registration is available at a higher fee of $90 for two days or $50 for one day, regardless of membership status. Pre-registered auditors will automatically receive USDF University credits. The pre-registration deadline will be about October 16, 2010. The fee for riders is $250 plus stabling fees at each venue. Applicants must submit a short video of themselves riding the horse they intend to bring to the clinic. The rider application deadline will be September 4, 2010. For further information and updates visit the USDF website www.usdf.org and the IDS newsletter and website www.indianadressage.org.

Finally, the IDS has taken the big step of going “Green” when it comes to our newsletter. This issue of the IDS Newsletter goes totally electronic. We will print a few copies for members who must have hard copy but overall, we are now electronic. The big advantage of going electronic (beyond the cost savings) is that photographs and other entries in the newsletter can be in full color. Barb and Deanne are doing a great job with the newsletter. Send them a email and let them know what you think or what you would like to see in the next issue.

Until the next issue,

Best wishes for all "10"s

Ken

News about Courtney King-Dye
from Assistant Director of Dressage, USEF

Dear All:

As you are aware one of our dressage riders Courtney King-Dye was in an accident; we are all keeping her in our thoughts and prayers.  We have been receiving a lot of support for her and wanted to let you know a fund has been set up for her in Florida.

Please see information below:

Checks can be made out to: Courtney King-Dye Medical Assistance Fund & sent to: Evelyn O'Sullivan, 100 S.W. 7th Terrace, Boca Raton, Fla. 33486

Since this is not through USEF, I don’t have any further information.  If you have any questions please contact Evelyn at pbderby@aol.com for more information.  But waned to share the information to help.

Sincerely,

Jenny Van Wieren

Dear Competitors, PM Delegates and Friends,

We all have heard now about the tragic accident in which one of our nation’s top riders, Courtney King-Dye, suffered devastating brain injuries while riding without a helmet.
As a show manager, our shows cannot be the only shows to require dressage riders to wear helmets which is why I have not already done this. We need a USEF rule change to do this.

Would you support this as a USEF rule change for all riders at all shows?

I will send you the results of this poll.

In the two days since I sent out a similar questionnaire to our competition riders, I have had 155 yes votes and 16 no votes—which is an overwhelming support of this rule change.

This has not yet been submitted yet as a USEF Rule Change Proposal. This may not be perfect wording, but it is a start and it can be changed and improved upon.  Please let me know what you think.

Proposed helmet rule change:

All riders at USEF-licensed dressage competitions are required to wear an ASTM/SEI-certified safety helmet with secured harness while riding on the grounds during and before competition days.  Riders may perform their test in a top hat, derby or hunt hat, and may change to their performance hat at a designated location near the in-gate before their test. If they opt to change their hat for the test, they must put their safety helmet back on at the designated location with the chin strap securely fastened, immediately upon exiting the competition arena.

             Thank you for your help.

Ann Genovese, GHF show manager  goodhorseman@att.net
